Raytac Jointed Apple HomeKit MFi Program

Standing on marketing perspective point of view, iPhone user are often been viewed as a higher contribution margin group. Not only talking about consumer behavior, but also the motivation looking for device integrated with their own iOS devices.
That explains why HomeKit devices recently has been widely spreading out in Apple stores or shops.

Wireless technology, says Bluetooth or WiFi, is the key role to connect between devices for Apple HomeKit implements. Surely, Bluetooth is more applicable than WiFi, not only easier to connect to iOS devices but also much lower power consumption and higher security level to rich consumer's experience.

Raytac has been devoting to Bluetooth Low Energy module development for several years, started from BT4.0 to the latest. Raytac modules has selected Nordic's solution, which is a highly optimized solution running HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP) and application firmware. The ultra-low power even enhance the design and usability for HomeKit devices implements.

After MFi Licenses program jointed, Nordic nRF5 HomeKit SDK is capable to access, Raytac expects to escalate the support ability in terms of hardware and firmware aspects for all customers who are interested in Apple HomeKit implements.

What is Eddystone
Eddystone is the standard for the beacon using the BLE that Google announced in July 2015.
It is available includes a number of broadcast frame types on all platforms that use the BLE, such as iOS as well as Android open standards, designed to give developers and venue owners flexibility in their beacon developments and applications. Eddystone helps beacons using the Proximity Beacon API, including adding attachments in the cloud and monitoring their health.

https://developers.google.com/beacons/

Feature
Eddystone's biggest feature is not intended to become a black box such like iBeacon service, works only for iOS. Eddystone program code is designed to be an open standard and has been published in GitHub.

The difference between iBeacon and Eddystone is the "broadcast frame type"
iBeacon transmits ID only (1 Type)
Eddystone transmits not only ID, but also URL and TLM. (3 Types)

Unlike iBeacon, Eddystone provides target users to receive the message through URL without app installing as long as the Bluetooth is turned on.

Packet
Eddystone is allowed to transmit 17 bytes every packet.
Thus, in case of URL broadcast frame type, the data must be downsize to fit in this 17 bytes limitation

User Scence Example
  • Real time Bus location and operation status
  • Approaching or nearby the poster, the URL link will pup up feeding immediately
  • Nearby Restaurant information feeding.
  • Nearby Shops information feeding
Eddystone is designed to compensate the demerit of iBeacon's, which is standardization.
However, iBeacon so far is still the most well-known and widely applied service right now as well as iPhone is the most well selling single mobile phone all over the word.
Thus, the trend of which one will prevail the competition between Eddystone Vs. iBeacon is still a interesting topic and lead the delimma for developers and user to observe closely.

Simple Summary

Scheduled to be released in end or 2016 or early 2017

1.Quadruples range

Extending range will deliver robust, reliable Internet of Things (IoT) connections that make full-home and building and outdoor use cases a reality. The expect power consumption of BT5  is expected to remain the same level as BT4.2.

BT4.2: 10~100M
BT5.X: Upto 400M

2.Doubles speed

Higher speeds will send data faster and optimize responsiveness. Increasing broadcast capacity will propel the next generation of “connectionless” services like beacons and location-relevant information and navigation.

BT4.2: 1M bit/Sec
BT5.X: 2M bit/Sec

3. Data broadcasting capacity by 800%

Bluetooth 5,will quadruple range and double speed of low energy connections while increasing the capacity of connectionless data broadcasts by 800%.

According to SIG's news press
“Increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices. And now with the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience”

"With the major boost in broadcast messaging capacity, the data being transferred will be richer, more intelligent. This will redefine the way Bluetooth devices transmit information, moving away from the app-paired-to-device model to a connectionless IoT where there is less need to download an app or connect the app to a device."

To redefine the behavior of moving away from app-paired-to-device model must bring a revolutionary user behavior and environment from 2017. That is the most critical point for all product design or related Bluetooth industry need to pay highly attention!

Quoted from Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/aarontilley/2014/12/18/mcdonalds-ibeacon

iBeacons are small, low-power Bluetooth devices, licensed by Apple, that stick to walls or sit on objects and interact with iPhones and iPads.  One of their main uses so far has been to help retailers and other merchants establish greater intimacy with customers who are willing to identify themselves in a store.  iBeacons are a marquee example of the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT).
Ever since iBeacon made its debut on the iPhone in 2013, it’s been heralded as the next big thing for retailers. Using the Bluetooth low energy radio on your smartphone, iBeacon technology can track your location within a few feet of where you are and push you special deals and advertisements onto your phone as you pass by stores. But so far, we’ve yet to see much uptake with retailers.
It looks like McDonald's is taking the plunge. 26 McDonald’s franchises in Columbus, Georgia have been testing out the technology with its customers. In a four week trial, these fast food joints have been pushing special deals for McChicken Sandwiches and 10-piece Chicken McNuggets. The promotions pushed McChicken Sandwich sales up 8 percent and Chicken McNuggets up 7.5 percent.
“In the fast food world, these are big numbers,” said Robert Hanczor, the CEO of San Diego-based iBeacon startup Piper, which made the app for McDonald’s to send the promotions. “They saw significant statistical change in consumer behavior.”
Based on these initial results, Piper is working on rolling out iBeacon programs to other McDonald’s franchises in the southeast for an additional 263 retail locations.
“Consumers won’t know these small radio devices are responsibly for the content they’re receiving,” said Hanczor, “but they’ll appreciate retailers are connecting with them with relevant information they can act upon.”

Apple iBeacon VS. Android NFC

Quote http://big5.xinhuanet.com/gate/big5/news.xinhuanet.com/info/2013-09/15/c_132721362.htm

Apple
